Weekend Cycling Events
Bike/Walk Week is coming to a close here in the Twin Cities, and it is going out with a pretty big bang, so many events, so little time.
The Bike Comics Show: This even runs though the end of June but tonight is the “opening night” event. 7pm, Black Dog Café & Wine Bar (at 4th and Broadway) in Lowertown, Saint Paul. “Join us at Black Dog Café & Wine Bar for the opening reception of The Bike Comics show—an exhibit of cartoons and drawings about bikes! The Bike Comics Show will feature the work of three amazing local cartoonists– Ken Avidor, Roger Lootine, and Andy Singer—and will run throughout the month of June.”
Bike-In Movie Night: Kevin Bacon in his prime, riding a sweet, sweet bike, what more could you want? Dusk (approximately 9 pm), Central Library Kellogg Courtyard, 90 W. 4th St., Saint Paul “Celebrate Bike Walk week in Saint Paul with a free bike-in movie: “Quicksilver.” In this 1986 film, Jack Casey (Kevin Bacon) used to be a hot-shot stock market whiz kid. After a disastrous professional decision, his life in the fast lane is over. He loses his nerve and joins a speed delivery firm which relies on bicycles to avoid traffic jams of San Francisco. Join The Friends, Bike Walk Week, and Nice Ride Minnesota for the outdoor film, bike transit information, and giveaways from Nice Ride Minnesota, including Nice Ride helmets and other swag.”
MS150 Duluth to the Twin Cities: This is one huge ride. If you are participating you are probably already on your way to Duluth to start the two-day 150-mile rolling party. Enjoy yourself and stay safe.
Confident Cycling: Is your bike sitting alone, collecting dust? Do you wish you could ride more but feel like you need some basic knowledge about your bike and how to handle it? This class is for you. You will explore the different parts of the bike from wheels to saddles, discover how to choose and fit a bike, and learn basic maintenance that can keep you rolling. We’ll also talk about selecting and properly fitting a helmet in addition to some other clothing & equipment to make your ride more enjoyable. Finally, we will cover some bike handling basics in a safe environment so you can take your new skills to the road with confidence. Brompton US Championships Pre-registration Party: Calhoun Cycle Pre-registration Party: Saturday night (June 9th) with Fabulous Food and entertainment. Pre-registration begins at 5pm and food/Party is from 6-8. Then a fun urban ride to Merlin’s Rest for a pint and a couple Pig-in-a-Jars.
Greenway Glow: Registration 6-8:30, ride starts around 9 PM and goes until midnight. Starts at the 10th Avenue entrance ramp to the Midtown Greenway and ends at Intermedia Arts (2822 Lyndale Avenue South) The Glow will take participants on a brief tour of Northern Spark art installations in the corridor, including a rest stop at the Vine Arts Centerand a post-ride party at Intermedia Arts. Glow riders will enjoy free food from Bryant Lake Bowl, as well as complimentary New Belgium beer.
Northern Spark Festival: This is a gigantic art festival that runs overnight and will feature many bicycle related events. Check out the schedule for full events, as there are waaay to many to list here.
Brompton US Championships: Date: Registration 8:30 – 9:40am, Race at 10am
Dress Code: All participants must wear a jacket, collared shirt and tie.
Helmets are a must and lycra is banned (or at least all lycra must be covered up)
Where: 34th and Lyndale in Minneapolis, MN
Prizes: Win a trip to England to the Brompton World Championship!
More Prizes: There will be special awards given for a Best Dressed man and Best Dressed Woman as well as for the fastest fold.
Open Streets 2012: It’s back, and we are pumped! 10-4 Lyndale Ave, Minneapolis, come-on down and enjoy yourself!
