Ride With Mayor Rybak Today

Minneapolis has the benefit of having a cycling enthusiast in the mayor’s office.  Today you have the chance to take a long lunch, or maybe play a little hooky and join Mayor Rybak on a Nice Ride into North Minneapolis.

Who:     Nice Ride Minnesota

What:     North Minneapolis Bike Ride With Mayor R.T. Rybak and State Representative Bobby Joe Champion.

When: Thursday, August 11, 2011.  Ride starts at 10:30am at UROC.  A brief gathering and opportunity for interviews at 10:45am at the Avenue Eatery.

Where: Start: University of Minnesota Urban Research & Community Outreach/Engagement Center 2001 Plymouth Ave. N. Minneapolis, MN 55411

End: Avenue Eatery, 1101 W Broadway Ave, Minneapolis.

Route:  We’ll ride east on Plymouth, North on Emerson to our rendezvous point at the Avenue Eatery, 1101 W Broadway Ave Minneapolis.  (Some riders will continue on a longer tour after the gathering at Avenue Eatery).

Why we are celebrating:  A year ago, Representative Champion and a group of engaged citizens led an effort to expand the start-up bike share system into North Minneapolis.  Nice Ride responded.  With support of the Minneapolis Department of Health and Family Support and funding made possible by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, through its Communities Putting Prevention to Work program, and Bike Walk Twin Cities, a program of Transit for Livable Communities, Nice Ride installed eight new stations in North Minneapolis in April.  The Department is aiming to make it easier for residents to live healthy lives, and the Nice Ride expansion provides an easy option for physical activity in an area of the city that experiences the highest rates of chronic diseases like diabetes.   Nice Ride also held a series of workshops and focus group meetings in the neighborhood.  We learned that residents and business owners in North Minneapolis—like all over Minneapolis—want better biking and walking  infrastructure and more opportunities to make exercise part of a daily routine.  Nice Ride subscribers will be available for interviews about how they use the bike share system as part of an active, healthy lifestyle.
