This past weekend may just have been the pinnacle of winter cycling events here in the Twin Cities. That is why it is Tuesday and we are still recapping the weekend events (part IV). The Penn-Cycle Ice Race is considered to be the granddaddy of them all when it comes to ice racing in the Twin Cities and this year was certainly not a let down.
Being the third Ice Race we’ve attended this year (see 1, 2) we can safely say that this race had the largest number of participants and spectators of any ice race this year. We also witnessed the highest number of crashes, flat tires, and some real excitement in the Men’s advanced final.
There are several things that make the course for the Penn Cycle Ice Race unique, starting with the terrain. As you will be able to see in the video and pictures below, the course contains a section that is plowed through the woods on dirt. This turns the race into part ice race and part mountain bike park.
The advanced race was shaping up to be another battle between Hollywood and Ezra when… well, we won’t spoil it for you. As a reminder the first Ice Race of the year was taken by Hollywood, by a long shot, then Ezra took a turn as winner, watch the video to see what happened on Saturday. Hollywood is in the white and black and jumps out to the early lead. Ezra is in blue and has the long beard. Enjoy!
